Business Case & Benefits Realisation

In any transformation or change piece, there are usually two key artefacts which are central to the change; a business case which documents the reasoning for a change including any cost-benefits analysis undertaken and all options considered, and a Benefits Realisation Plan.

A Benefits Realisation Plan looks at identifying the proposed benefits of any changes and putting in place activities to ensure that the proposed benefits are tested and measured against along the delivery lifecycle.

Whilst both artefacts are usually owned by a Project Manager or PMO team, a Business Analyst has significant input into both. In respect of the Business Case, a Business Analyst will support the change team by helping to conduct a cost-benefit-analysis and will work closely with business stakeholders to identify Epics (High Level Requirements) and / or Critical Success Factors for delivery.

Furthermore, in the case of a Benefits Realisation Plan, a Business Analyst will work closely with the change team to initially elicit and document envisaged benefits and ensure that these are continually revisited and tested against in regards to a change. Business Analysts are particularly helpful in bringing stakeholders along on the journey of change and ensuring that they are consistently engaged to help test these benefits throughout and post delivery.
