Full Traceability

Traceability is often defined as the “the ability of a product to be traced through every stage of its production back to its origin” (Macmillan Dictionary).

In Business Analysis, traceability tends to be linked to both requirements management and process modelling and can help businesses in a number of ways. If you view requirements or process-models as the products in regards to the Macmillan Dictionary definition shown above, a well-rounded traceability matrix will detail the journey of the product right from it's creation through the change lifecycle to it's completion and delivery.

In Business Analysis, there are three main forms of traceability in regards to these products; Vertical Traceability which is essentially Traceability of all artefacts (be it the smallest requirement or a high level process model) right back to organisational / project goals and / or scope, Horizontal Traceability which is the ability to trace products right back to it's creation and where the product has originated from, and finally Forward Traceability which is the ability to plan ahead and ensure that testing, delivery and benefits mapping can be carried out specifically to measure all products.

A full and well-packaged traceability matrix shall encompass all three of these forms of traceability and will ensure that the change you are delivering is well aligned to both the organisation and project's goals and scope for delivery and also offers bi-directional traceability back to the product's (requirements or process model) origin and through to testing and benefits realisation.
